On November 5th someone wrote from this region to the Kdlnische Volkszeitung: ^It is said in this neighbourhood that a woxmded soldier of the Landwehr who is at the hospital of Sigmaringen had had his eyes torn out and his nose and ears cut off in Belgium. The man's wife wished to see him, but the superior medical ofl5cer and the sister of charity dissuaded her saying that her husband was very grievously wounded.
Notwithstanding this she persisted. When she was taken into the room and had seen ...the horrible mutilation inflicted on her hus- band she fell dead at the foot of the bed.
