The roof was a complex hammerbeam design, and had been painted in bright reds, golds and greens, so that students bored with their lectures could tip their heads back and lose themselves in the intricate patterns that swirled and twined above. ‘Quickly,’ called Master Thorpe from the dais at the far end of the hall.
