What reading level is The Hate U Give book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

I watch it crawl down the street for the longest time till I get the sense to alert somebody. “Daddy!”
He looks up from pulling weeds around his bell peppers. “Are they for real with that?”
The tank resembles the ones they show on the news when talking about war in the Middle East. It’s the size of two Hummers. The blue-and-white lights on the front make the street almost as bright as it is in daytime. An officer is positioned on top, wearing a vest and a helmet. He points his rifle ahead.
A voi
...ce booms from the armored vehicle, “All persons found violating the curfew will be subject to arrest.”
Daddy pulls more weeds. “Some bullshit.”
Brickz follows the piece of bologna I dangle in front of him all the way to his spot in the kitchen. He sits there all content, chomping on it and the rest of his food. Brickz won’t act crazy as long as Daddy’s home.
All of us are kinda like Brickz, really. Daddy being home means Momma won’t sit up all night, Sekani won’t flinch all the time, and Seven won’t have to be the man of the house.

lets be honest with each other. this is a great book and all but... I find it unfair that people think that its just black people that the police and other people are racist to. Mexican Americans are also a focal point for racist comments from police and other people. but this is a great book and would definetly recomend for a friend :)

I think i loved it because it shows what [people need to understand about. Such an amazing book! Very well wrote. Good book for teens. And adults. This book defiantly teaches a lesson. As a teenager that has both white and black people in my school, I can verify that both races constantly swear. It's more common in larger schools, but is still very prevalent in smaller schools, like the one I attend

Please read the entire book in 3 days. As with all books it is very diverse. Please read it in it's entirety before making a judgment on this book. I was able to relate in every way and I thank the author for being bold enough to speak the truth. This is 3 days before 2020 and we continue to deal with these experiences today and the names continue to grow. So please, "Don't judge a book by it's cover".... Those that read the book would understand.

You know, that is your opinion and I will not say anything bad about it besides the fact that I disagree. Have a nice day.

I loved this book but I don't like that they portray all white people as racist or totally ignorant.

I just liked the book because it shows problems between both races including racism and stereotypical actions.

Horrible book. I started reading it, and the way it portrays black people as people who curse all the time and do inappropriate things (her and Chris) is unrealistic and offensive! Even after I finished reading it, I was very disappointed! Won't ever read again and will most certainly never suggest to a friend!
