' " Then, hearing that he was worse, he said: 160 LOYAL IN REBELLION " ' Tell him that I am praying for him as I believe I have never prayed for myself/ " The night after the Northern defeat at Chancellorsville was, according to President Lincoln's secretary-histori- ans, the darkest of all in the terrible war.
