What reading level is The Highway of Death book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Few people in this land of peace can realize the harrowing experiences of the inhabitants of a beleaguered city. At all times during the course of a war, the people of the war zone suffer the conse- quences attending the clash of enemies. Har- rowing and terrible, though they may seem, nevertheless incidents uncommonly ludicrous are bound to occur. Thus it happened previous to the invasion, as the Austrians began to hurl their shells into Belgrade, the French marines on the Serbian side had bee...n ordered to evac- uate the city with the Serbians. They manned several large naval guns and were bountifully supplied with ammunition. Now, the French did not care to have their valuable ammunition fall into the hands of the enemy, so on this account they remained behind hurling their shells across the river into Semlin as rapidly as they could load and fire. They kept up a ter- rific fire for about three hours, until their shells were entirely wasted, then hurriedly retreated and caught up with the fleeing Serbs.
