The failure of this attempt, followed by the death of Lord Raglan on the 28th, checked for the time being the forward movement, and during the months of July and August the troops were engaged merely in advancing the lines of attack..., and in cutting off the besi^ed from outside aid. On August 15th, an attempt of the Russians under General Gort- chakoff to take the offensive and dislodge the French and Sardinians from their position on the Pedioukine heights, re- sulted in the victory for the allies of the Tchemaya, and pre- pared the way for a second and final assault. On September 5th the bombardment began : the batteries of the allies opened a veritable fire of hell upon the fortress, and for two days poured a continuous stream of shot and shell into the be- leaguered dty.
