The details of his career in Corsica remind one of Mark Twain's humorous account of the revolution in Pitcairn's island, or Daniel Pratt as candidate for President in 1876. Neuhof could speak ma...ny languages which had been picked up easily in his wander- ings, but, aside from these, his attainments were not unusual ; and his ability was ordinary. Neuhof had a knowledge of men and of the weaknesses of human nature ; and his career is worthy of study as an example of what can be done With a glib tongue, a vivid imagination and a brazen effrontery. There is little doubt that George Washington or Frederick the Great, or even Shamyl, placed in the same situation as Neuhof, would have achieved the independence of Corsica.
