Nature does not. always attain to her end ; on the contrary, there is much that happens in direct contravention of her laws.*' Now the use which Alexander makes of this Aristotelian view in order to refute the Stoical theory of an unbroken and eternal chain of causes, is not calculated to raise a high opinion of the pro- foundness of his judgment.
