This affair contributed to extend the insurrection, and every district in which the ancient proprietors had been deprived of their estates, was in arms. The triumph of the rebels at Puri was short-lived. One of their objects in march- ing thither had been to place their Raja at their head ; but his fears or his prudence deterred him from connecting himself with the disturbance, and one material element of opposition was thus defective.
