The combined fleets entered the Number, and difembarked the troops, who began to extend tlleir depredations on all fides ; when IVlorcar carl of Northumberfand, and Edwin earl of Mercia, the king*s brother-inJaw , having haftily colleded fome forces, ventured to give them battle.
