Chaloner Smith says that he was considered at the outset of his career to rival, if not to surpass, M'Ardell, in spirit and fire, and there is little doubt that he would have run him very closely, and probably outstripped him, but for his fatal inclination to put off work to the very last moment. He came to London about the same time as M'Ardell, and established himself near Drummond's at Charing Cross ; but procrastination soon brought him into disrepute, and Redgrave is responsible for the story that Sayer con- signed him to Fleet prison, nominally for debt, but actually in order that he might know where to find him.
