The learned German theologian, Bellerman, ^ Strong and McClintock's " Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature." 3;8 PREHISTORIC MASONRY thinks that he has found the derivation in the Captu, or old Egyp-... tian language, where the words abrah, signifying "word," and sadschy signifying "blessed," "holy," or "adorable," and therefore ubrahsadsch, Hellenized into Abraxas, would denote "the holy, blessed, or adorable Word," thus approximating to the spirit of the Jewish Cabalists in their similar use of a Holy Name.
Whether the word was thus derived or was invented by Basilides on account of the numerical value of its letters, is uncertain. He, however, applied it in his system as the name of the Supreme God.
