The rebels were defeated and General Zollicoffer was killed. Dec. 23, 1880, the sword of General Zollicoffer was presented to this Post by Comrade A. M. Cook, v\^ho says "this modern weapon was taken from General Zolli- coffer' s body by a hospital steward and presented to A. M. Cook, surgeon in charge, who now^ pres- ents it to George H. Thomas Post No. 5, Dept. Illinois, G. A. R. , of which he is a member. " This w^as the first signal victory gained "by General George H. Thomas, and this Post..., named in his honor, is possessor of the sword worn by the General whom he vanquished. April 15, 1881, a committee on history and publication was appointed, but no work of note was done by them. Sept. 30, 1881, a vote to or- ganize a drum corps passed, the members of the corps to be the sons of members of the Post. This drum corps was properly instructed by Comrade Harry Wagar and kept uniformed, and was the pride of the Post during its career of a year or tw'O. It was found, however, that the boys composing its membership would outgrow uniforms fre- quently, and its services were finally dispensed with.
