The forts discov- ered their approach and opened fire, whereupon... the mortars increased their fire. After several mishaps. Lieutenant Caldwell passed Passing through a gap in the obstructions, turned about, and under a full Obstruc- ^^^^ of steam struck the chain holding the hulks together, and ran tions the bow of the boat so far upon it that it was lifted out of the water, and the weight of the craft snapped the huge links, and opened a still larger gap. Three nights later a careful examination was made of this opening, and the w^ay was found to be clear.
On the 20th, Farragut held a council of war with his officers.
