" This was a distinct corps of mounted men, attached to the person of Washington, but never spared in battle. It was organized in 1776, soon after the siege of Boston, while the American army was encamped upon York or Manhattan Island, near the city of New York. It consisted of a major's command — OFOURFLAG.... Qf one hundred and eighty men — and its chief bore the title of captain commandant. One of the guard is seen holding a horse, and is in the act of receiving a flag from the Genius of Lib- erty, who is personified as a woman leaning upon the Union shield, near which is the American Eagla The motto of the corps, " Conquer or die, " is upon a ribbon, over top.
