In August the whole of the male adult population were sworn in as special constables, and a strict account of arms was taken. On August 19th the ship Duke of Portland, Capt. Seymour, arrived from Auckland with 250 rank and file of the 58th Regiment, ten officers, 13 non-commissioned officers, three drummers, detachments of Artillery and Sappers, and several field pieces.
