England in 1622. 18 The most distinguished line of the name in New England, both for the clarity of its descent and the eminence of the men it has contributed to the nation's greatness, is called by genealogists the "Roxbury Bowleses. " The founder of the Roxbury line was John Bowles, who came from England in the ship ''Hopewell" in 1636. 19 He was long a member of ihe Massachu- setts Company, for as early as March, 1629, he had contributed 25 pounds to its treasury.
