To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The imnates of the house were greatly re- duced in number, and the distance between them and the family proper was greatly widened. From retainers they became hired servants merely, kept on wages and liable to dismissal. The household school, in which greatest and least acquired the same elements of knowledge, and the same acquaintance with traditional and oral litera- ture, was broken up. Education became the privilege of the few who could pay for in- struction, while the rest clung to the fra...g- ments of the old and popular culture of the Hall, which survived in ballads and folk- tales. The common workshop was replaced by the shops of the town's people; but here also there was a loss of that goodfellowship between master and men, which belonged to the familiar relations of the earlier time. Something of the old character citing to THE DWELLING-HOUSE the " menials " after the change, especially in Scotland, where medigeval usage still pre- vailed. Dean Ramsay illustrates this in his delightful " Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character " (1858) , in the chapter " On the Old Scottish Domestic Servant." The Dean fails to trace the peculiarity of the old- fashioned servant to its historic source, hut he illustrates it very amply.
