It had become Presby- terian in its polity, and, with multiplied facili- ties, had fairly entered upon its prosperous career. In the midst of these tokens of suc- cess, the . ministry of Mr. Woodruff here was brought to an abrupt close, by one of those liabilities to which the pastoral relation is at all times exposed, and to be guarded against only by extraordinary pr...udence. The young village of Auburn was in his day greatly agi- tated, and much divided in opinion over an alleged homicide, the point in dispute being whether the man died of the blows inflicted by his assailant, or from injudicious treatment of his wounds by the attendant physicians.
Mr. Woodruff's knowledge of the affair came by way of pastoral duty, and compelled him to be a witness at the inquest and on the trial.
24 This involved him in the controversy, which took on several phases of excitement, and, un- fortunately finding its way into the pulpit, re- sulted at length in a request from the congrega- tion that the Presbytery dissolve the relation.
