Hayes dared them to the issue. Spite of pro tests from timid Republicans, he came out boldly for resump tion and the re-establishment of the specie standard, turned the tide against the inflationist hosts, and carried the State. From that moment the Ohio Governor was seen by many to be of presidential stature. John Sherman was the first to name him for the higher office.
