Paez represented to him that the only means by which this could be accom- plished were his abandonment of the schismatic creed he held, and conversion to the church of Rome. His argu- ments produced all the more impression from the fact that amidst the internal convulsions of the Abyssinians, the Portuguese had in fact evinced the utmost fidelity and bravery.
