II. S 258 MISSIONS [Book VII Spanish and Portuguese powers contributed largely to these results : this influence also made itself felt at the same time and in various forms in Abyssinia. Many attempts had been made in the latter country at an earlier period, but all were ineffectual. It was not till the year 1603, when the Portuguese of Fremona gave essential aid to the Abyssinians in a battle with the Kaffirs, that they and their religion first attained to more respectful consideration. Just t...hen Father Paez arrived, an able Jesuit of great address, who preached in the language of the country and procured access to the court. The victorious monarch desired to form more intimate relations with the king of Spain, principally for the purpose of securing an ally against his enemies in the interior. Paez represented to him that the only means by which this could be accom- plished were his abandonment of the schismatic creed he held, and conversion to the church of Rome. His argu- ments produced all the more impression from the fact that amidst the internal convulsions of the Abyssinians, the Portuguese had in fact evinced the utmost fidelity and bravery.
