In his boyhood he worked in a cotton factory, where he acquired a taste for industrial pursuits; but his father, imbued with his countrymen's passion for learning, was anxious that the boy should receive a good education, and eventually he became a schoolmaster. He did not remain long in this profession. He was thrilled with the romance of industry, and we are told that " as he read the accounts of the marvellous developments which invention was working in the field of industrial enterprise he ...was fired with an intense longing to take his part in the great mechani- cal achievements that were going forward." His oppor- tunity came to him in the offer of a post as book-keeper in the firm of Townend Brothers of Allingworth, near Bradford, and he gladly embraced it. He was able now to indulge his natural bent for mechanical research, and he threw himself into his work with unsparing ardour and zeal. All his leisure was devoted to working out improve- ments in the machinery, and the good results which he achieved attracted the notice of his employers, who even- tually raised him to the position of manager, and afterwards made him a partner in the firm.
