A great change came over Meah ; she lost her harsh manner to- wards A-Thy, and she, simple soul, thought that the little one would bring peace amongst them. The baby was three months old when one day Yongh came from her village. She had never cared much for the sulky fellow, but now, so far from home, the well-known face was an unex- THE RIVERSIDE PAGODA. 145 pected pleasure. A-Thy, so much alone, for she was neither maid nor mistress, listened eagerly to all the gossip from her little village.... Three days Yongh stayed with them, and it was on the evening of the third day that A-Thy was wanted in Meah's chamber. It was a rude awakening. Hat, flushed and angry, called her by a shameful name. Meah was as hard as a stone. They would give fifty piastres to Yongh if A-Thy would marry him. The child was theirs. A-Thy lay weeping at Meah's feet, now crying, now raging, now explaining for the hundredth time that Yongh was nothing to her. But Meah had spoken : she wanted the baby all to herself.
