Three days Yongh stayed with them, and it was on the evening of the third day that A-Thy was wanted in Meah's chamber. It was a rude awakening. Hat, flushed and angry, called her by a shameful name. Meah was as hard as a stone. They would give fifty piastres to Yongh if A-Thy would marry him. The child was theirs.
A-Thy lay weeping at Meah's feet, now crying, now raging, now explaining for the hundredth time that Yongh was nothing to her. But Meah had spoken : she wanted the baby all to herself.
