On its part, royalty, while declaring that it only wished to concern itself with the political privileges of the Calvinists, seemed in reality to have undertaken the task of menacing their religious existence. Several times promises had been made to level it ; but they were only given to trifle with the Rochelais. At heart, it was intended to maintain it, and to use it, should need be, against the place.
