Rickards's rendering of the first six books of the Aeneid (187 1) is abler, more concise, and less Miltonic than Singleton's or Thornhill's; yet in avoiding the "debilitating expansion of the sense " he lost what he himself thought " the highest merit of a poeti- cal translation," that it should "read like an original" and "pre- serve .
