The Suprema, however, took a cooler view of the matter, pointing out that, by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, English subjects could not be prosecuted for practising their religion in Spanish terri- tory, but at the same time it approved of the action of the tribunal and promised to ask the king to make due provision for the future.
