The judicial separation here decreed, though it free her from maltreatment after the expiry of her husband's term of punishment, augments the other perils arising from deser- tion ; and if, as is possible, Mrs. Cook had a wish and a chance of contracting a fresh matrimonial engagement, it is doubtful whether she would regard the judicial separation as favourable. We were acquainted in New York, a State which does not allow the ground we are discussing, with a lp,dy whose husband had been condemned to penal servitude for life or a very long term.
