" The immediate result of Mr. Monroe's consulta- tions with Mr. Jefferson was the promulgation of the Monroe doctrine, which terminated an inglorious epoch of the history of the country. Mr. Wharton, in his introduction to the "American State Trials, " refers with just pride to the Monroe declaration in the following terms : "At last the United States, which fifty years ago could hardly keep its central territory from being carried away under its very eyes, announced to- Europe that it would consider any foreign interfer- ence in the affairs of the American continent as a cause of war ; and Europe listened and acquiesced.
