The cause of the present distress is a very compli- cated one, and certainly slavery, with its natural and legiti- mate fruits, as it once existed in this island, has had a full share in inducing our present calamities. It has ever appeared to me, that since the period of emancipation the different classes in our land have not felt and acted towards one another as being to all intents and purposes members of the same body, engaged in the same cause, the success of which securing the prosperity ...of all alike, and the failure of which involving all in one common calamity. I believe it is a fixed law in the economy of our common Parent, that the united interests of a nation are bound up in the well- being of each part, and that the real advantage of the one is x2 308 ANTI-SLATE-TRADB MOTBMBlfT.
