The Auditor, representing the highest civil authority, on the receipt of a letter from the Cardinal, protesting against the persecutions of himself and the priest Herve, and demanding the withdrawa...l of the guard placed over him, and the immediate release of Herve went himself to the Legate's house with a body of armed soldiers, and in the name of the three Estates of the city demanded an audience. Fearing that some sacri- legious outrage would ensue if he admitted them, he ordered the inner doors of the hall to be shut, * " De Vita, etc. , dementis XL, " pp. 168-9.
