At the same time that he was acquiring the most valuable practical experience by constant dealings with the colliers, by superintending their work, and by his exact knowledge of the workings, he was also attending special evening, and sometimes afternoon, classes in Edinburgh, which ultimately enabled him to obtain a certificate.
