But the process was to be very much briefer. Many confusions had already been cleared up in the course of the pohtical 122 THE LABOUR UNREST struggle ; and that struggle had not been without its effect upon the development of economic vision. Education was more wide- spread than in the corresponding early stages of the political development ; a considerable force of synthetic thought on the economic aspect of democracy was present from the outset in the new party ; and the disposition to look f...or essential things and to define first principles, as against the empirical quackery of seeing nothing but a confusion of separate detailed reforms, was already strong within the party at its inception. Strong, but not dominant ; not yet sufficient to save the party from that by-path of social reform within the existing order which, it was to discover by experiment, led to no satisfaction for the economic needs of the worker. And therefore it was down that apparently promis- ing by-path that the new party plunged its ParHamentary way, dragging with it, to their manifest discomfort and against their better judgment, those men in it who had a sufficient synthetic vision to know that the army must sooner or later march back again to the main revolutionary road of advance before becoming an effective force for the emancipation of industry.
