What reading level is The Land of Contrasts book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
It is rather interesting to observe the different forms whichvulgarity is apt to take in the two countries. In England vulgarity isstolid; in America it is smart and aggressive. We are apt, I think, tooverestimate the amount in the latter country because it is so muchmore in voluble evidence. An English vulgarian is often hushed intosilence by the presence of his social superior; an American vulgarianeither recognises none such or tries to prove himself as good as youby being unnecessarily _gro...b_. This has, at any rate, a manlier airthan the vulgar obsequiousness of England towards the superior on theone hand or its cynical insolence to the inferior on the other. Thefeeling which made a French lady of fashion in the seventeenth centurydress herself in the presence of a footman with as much unconcern asif he were a piece of furniture still finds its modified analogy inEngland, but scarcely in America. Almost the only field in which theAmericans struck me as showing anything like servility was in theirtreatment of such mighty potentates as railway conductors, hotelclerks, and policemen.
