Of the four factorsin the Darwinian formula, --variation, heredity, the struggle, andnatural selection, --variation is the most negligible; it furnishes aninsufficient handle for selection to take hold of. Something moreradical must lead the way to new species.

The Darwinians are hostile to Lamarck with his inner developing andperfecting principle, and, by the same token, to Aristotle, who isthe father of the theory. They regard organic evolution as a purelymechanical process.
