It stands in the market-place, at the corner of the churchyard, and is a square, substantial-looking house, one of the best in the town, just such a place, in fact, as a visitor would fix upon as the residence of the principal inhabitant. And it was in fact so occupied for some years during the first half of this century.
Mr. Henry Sellwood came of a... family of Berkshire and Somerset- shire squires, a family which could claim as high an antiquity as almost any in these counties. It had its days of prosperity, but, a century ago, these were over, thanks to the easy, careless, sometimes extravagant life Digitized by Google HORNCASTLE 55 which squire after squire for not a few generations had led. With this tradition Henry Sellwood determined to break, and become a solicitor.
This was not an easy resolution to make, and a very difficult one to carry out.
