clubs and over dinner tables. The landlords knew how much they had at stake in preventing the League from grasping the great political weaj)on — a Parliamentary Party. But after surveying their resources, thej^ were so confident of success that they brought two candidates into the field, a Whig and a Tory.^ On the day of nomination a company of carbineers, a large body of infantry, and 800 armed constabulary made a garrison of the city. The polling under the law then in operation lasted three d...ays, and at its close the Whig landlord was elected by a majority of forty over the Tory landlord, and of eleven over the candidate of the League.
The circumstances which produced this result all belong to a past time. The constituency which even under the franchise then existing ought to have reached ten thousand, had been permitted by apathy to fall under six hundred ; and among this small number there was a considerable proportion of £50 freeholders manu- factured at will by the landlords.
