Parzival looks about in wonder at the mag- nificent scene. He observes that the king alone is sorrowful, that he seems to be suffering 65 deeply. What can it all mean? He is about to ask, when suddenly he remembers the warning of Gurnemanz : " Don't betray your ignorance by asking foolish questions. " Ah, he has bethought himself in time ! He is but slightly acquainted with courts, with cul- tured society. How does he know but such a ceremonial as this may be of comparatively common occurrence ...among people of high posi- tion? And what would they think of his igno- rance if they perceived his unsophisticated sim- plicity? Certainly the epic moment is a vivid one.
So he gazed at the wonderful picture spread before him ; he absorbed the wondrous odours of the Grail; he felt the strange and inexpres- sible delight of its presence, and behaved, he was assured, like a polished gentleman. He was presented with a wonderful sword, such as he had never seen, and, as he noticed the' coun- tenance of Amfortas contract with pain, the 66 of question again trembled on his lips What ails / you?
