Morrill's thought. He did not aim to restrict the non-professional classes (as just defined) to a single field of learning, or to subject them to a single form or type of education. Other scientific studies than those related to agi-iculture and the mechanic arts wore not to be excluded, the ancient classics were not to be exclude'd, and the new Colleges were so to cover the whole field of ancient and modern learning as to fit their students for "the several 21 pursuits and professions in life.... " Mr. Morrill's purpose was, in short, to bring all the resources of modern science into direct relation to modern industries, and to emancipate aspiring and talented youth from the necessity of patroniz- ing only one type of College and entering only one restricted class of professions. This "practical" aim was a definite foreshadowing of what is now known as the laboratory method, which is coming to be everywhere recognized as absolutely indispensable to the best teaching of every branch of science, whether pure or applied, and to the wide- spread establishment of which the land grant Colleges have powerfully contributed.
