Philip II. was the son of the Emperor Charles V. and of Isabella of Portugal. He was bom at Valladolid on the 2ist of May, 1527, eight years after his father, already King of Spain, had been chosen Emperor of Germany. His early training was directed by his mother, who, however, died when he was but twelve years old.
