The origin of Buckingham's hatred of Wolsey has been ascrib...ed to various occurrences ; but I think it more likely to have arisen from that indescribable antipathy which may have been produced by the character of the Cardinal operat- ing on the pride and rash temperament of the duke. The incidents which are said to have caused their quarrel, I re- gard only as occurrences whieh served to publish the animo- sity of Buckingham. Some have said that the duke, holding the basin and towel to the emperor and the king at Canter- bury, was enraged at the Cardinal for also attempting to wash his fingers while he held it.
