Moreover, ' except in the i8 5 5] ON MODERN HISTORY. 123 small portions handed down to us by the stern historian of tyranny, ' there was no writer like ' the almost infallible guide on whom we rely in our Grecian studies. ' The attention, therefore, of the student was generally con- fined to that portion which exhibited the growth to perfection of a constitution surpassed only by our own, and in which the deficiences of ancient authorities were wonderfully supplied by the almost unerring divina...tion of a modern genius. What Aristotle and Butler were to moral philosophy, Thucydides and Niebuhr were to history. But ' any attempt to introduce the almost infinite field of modern history as a subject of ordinary study and examination on the same level as Grecian and Roman history must be utterly fruitless. ' Moreover, he strongly deprecated setting up a distinct school of modern history as false in principle. It was to build up and fortify that wall of separation which it had been the great aim of Arnold's historical labours to level with the ground : an aim which he had avowed when he expressed the hope that his edition of Thucydides might ' contribute to the conviction that history is to be studied as a whole, and according to its philosophical divisions, not such as are merely geographical and chronological : that the history of Greece and Rome is not an idle inquiry about remote ages and forgotten institutions, but a living picture of things present, fitted not so much for the curiosity of the scholar, as for the instruction of the statesman and the citizen.
