N. E.; hoisted our ensign and jpendant. At fifteen minutes past meri...dian, the ship hoisted her colours, an English ensign, having a signal flying at the main. At twenty-six minutes past one, P. M., being suffi- ciently from the land, and finding the ship to be an English fr^ate, took in the mainsail and royals, tacked ship, and stood for the enemy.
"At fifty minutes past one, P. M., the enemy bore down with an intention of raking us, which we avoided by wear- ing. At two, P. M., the enemy being within half a mile of us, and to windward, and having hauled down his colours, except the union Jack, at the mizenmast bead, induced me ^ COMMODORE BAINBRIDG^.
