The name Lazarus is not a common name in the New Testament, and indeed there is only one other place where it occurs, in a parable found in the third Gospel ; and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus closes with this sentence, "Neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead.' ' And this is just what John's story means to show, that not even when Lazarus is raised from the dead will the Pharisees believe ; their hatred only is intensified, and at once they plot Jesus' death.
