I have not seen it." December 15th, 1800. — Jefferson, who had been for four or five years, a correspondent of Burr's, writes him to-day a con- gratulatory letter upon the happy result of the election. The exact result was not yet known ; but there was no doubt the Republicans had triumjDhed. The tie was dimly fore- shadowed. After some preliminary observations of no import- ance now, Mr. Jefferson proceeds thus : " It was badly managed not to have arranged with certainty what seems to have bee...n left to hazard. It was the more ma- terial, because I understand several high-flying Federiilists have expressed their hope that the two Republican tickets may be equal, and their determination in that case to prevent a choice in the House of Representatives (which they are strong enough to do), and let the government devolve on a President of the Senate. Decency required that I should be so entirely j)assive during the late contest, that I never once asked whether arrangements had been made to prevent so many from dropping votes intentionally as might frustrate half the Republican wish ; nor did I doubt, till lately, that such had been made.
