From all we know of him and his great work for both Church and State, it is amazing to find so comparatively little said of him in our many historical accounts of his time. It has been the misfortune of few great man to have been so utterly deserted by modern writers, e...ven of his own way of thinking. To make some attempt, however imperfect, to reinstate Gilbert Sheldon in his true position on the stage of history, is, to say the least, a mere act of common justice to a great memory. At the close of this chapter I venture to introduce the statements of the leading authors who, as it has been truly said, ' have successfully conspired to depose him from the place which he occupied in the view of the men of his own time. ' Such a method may possibly disclose the way in which the history of the English Church has not infre- quently suffered perversion, and, thus twisted out of recognition, has come down to our day unchallenged, and accepted without examination or question.
