" Respecting the Lisbon... business, Strangford com- plains bitterly that they have garbled his despatch ; but while he says this to me, and one or two others, who are likely to know the truth, as an excuse for the bragging which appears in his letter, he tells people whom he thinks he can take in, that if the whole despatch had been published, it would have appeared how much more concern he had in the transaction. I doubt not, indeed, that the original contained a great deal more bragging ; but, unluckily, enough is published to deprive both Strangford and the ministers of every atom of credit which they may wish to take for the event.
