He left England during the civil wars just mentioned, and had the honour of Bernard's friendship. On returning to his na- tive country he devoted himself to the restoration of learning, which had severely suffered during the recent troubles. At Oxford, he not only contributed the example of his zeal and acquirements to the cause of letters, but even assisted it largely at his own personal expense.
