XV.] LIFE OF SAMUEL CROMPTON. 187 The expenses attendant upon his journeys through England, Scotland, and Ireland, in search of statistics ; the travelling and other expenses of his witnesses ; his long residence in London ; and the neglect of business not only by himself but by his family — his two eldest sons being then entirely occupied by their military duties as officers in a militia regiment under arms, — must have melted down the five thousand pounds by anticipation, to a compara- tively small sum.
