Chapelain, the author of La Pucelle, ' had written to express his concern at her illness, and when replying to his letter she asked him for the eighth volume of ' Le Grand Cyrus, ' which was then coming out. When she received it she was profoundly touched to find that in the depth of her adversity and the dis- grace of her party ...it had been dedicated to her. On the volume was her crowned initial' A. , ' sup- ported by an eagle and a ' Jupiter Tonans, ' 160 MADAME DE LONGUEVILLE with the bold legend, ' Qui ne l'honore pas est digne de la foudre ' (Him who does not honour her Jove's thunders shall destroy).
On August 29, 1652, Madame de Longue- ville wrote to Chapelain : 1 1 You will judge by my eagerness in asking you for the eighth part of " Cyrus " of the joy with which I received it. I confess, though, that it is not without shame I look upon the continued generosity of Monsieur and Made- moiselle de Scudery ; for, although there is much pleasure in being its object, there is so little in letting the world believe that one does not deserve to be so, that this last thing prevents one's feeling the satisfaction the first would afford.
