So long as his lieutenants had been creatures of his own, his dominion over the province had been absolute; but when they werethus replaced by officers of the King's selection, his influence becamemerely nominal; so great, moreover, had been the tact of Henry, that hehad found means to compel the Duke himself to solicit the dismissal ofSobole and his brother, ...in order to assure his own tenure of office; andhe was consequently placed in a position which rendered all semblance ofdiscontent impossible, while the citizens, delighted to find themselvesthus unexpectedly revenged upon their oppressors, and proud of thepresence of the sovereigns within their walls, were profuse in theirdemonstrations of loyalty and attachment.
A slight indisposition having detained the King for a longer period thanhe had anticipated at Metz, the Duchesse de Bar, the Duc de Lorraine, and the Duc and Duchesse de Deux-Ponts, arrived on the 16th of March towelcome him to the province.
